Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. This misplaced tissue can implant on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, the bowels, and other areas in the pelvis or abdomen. We understand that living with endometriosis can be incredibly challenging, causing chronic pain and impacting many aspects of your life. We want to assure you that you’re not alone, and we’re here to offer compassionate care and support.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Endometriosis can manifest in a variety of ways, and the severity of symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Some experience debilitating pain, while others may have milder symptoms. Common symptoms include:

  • Pelvic Pain: This can be a constant or recurring pain, often worsening during menstruation. It may feel like a deep ache, a sharp stabbing pain, or a radiating pain to the back or legs.
  • Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea): Severe cramping during menstruation is considered a hallmark symptom. The pain can be so intense that it can interfere with daily activities.
  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Some women with endometriosis experience very heavy or prolonged bleeding.
  • Pain During or After Intercourse (Dyspareunia): Endometriosis can make intimacy painful, impacting relationships and emotional well-being.
  • Infertility: Endometriosis can sometimes make it difficult to conceive.
  • Painful Bowel Movements or Urination: This may occur, especially during menstruation, if the endometrial tissue is affecting the bowel or bladder.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness is a common complaint, likely due to the chronic pain and inflammation associated with endometriosis.
  • Other Symptoms: These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and bloating, particularly around the time of menstruation.

Treatment Options for Endometriosis

We understand that finding the right treatment for endometriosis can be a journey and it can be distressing and frustrating. Dr. Basu will work with you to develop a personalised treatment plan based on your individual symptoms, the severity of your condition, and your desire for future fertility. Treatment options may include:

  • Pain Management:
    • Over-the-counter pain relief: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ponstan can help manage pain.
    • Prescription pain medication: In cases of severe pain, stronger pain medication may be necessary.
  • Hormonal suppression
    • Oral Medications: These can help reduce pain and bleeding symptoms
    • Hormonal IUDs: These can deliver progestin directly to the uterus, reducing bleeding and pain.
  • Surgery:
    • Laparoscopic surgery: This minimally invasive procedure can be used to remove endometrial deposits and adhesions.
    • Hysterectomy: In severe cases, when other treatments have failed and fertility is no longer desired, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be considered.
